SUMMARY |
MULTIDISCIPLINARY SYNERGISM TO IMPROVE EUROPEAN ALLELOPATHY RESEARCH
Allelopathy is an emergent field of science, needing competencies in various disciplines such as organic chemistry, plant anatomy, plant physiology, plant ecology...
Since about 10 years, few teams in Europe increased their scientific impact in the international competition in allelopathy.
This project aims not only at gathering knowledge of those teams but also at creating a synergism by multidisciplinary exchange of methods. This holistic perception of allelopathy should benefit to young scientists, giving them tools to extend the knowledge on chemical interactions in plant science.
This project is a compilation of three events, each one being mainly opened to young scientists from other disciplines (i.e. the event on plant anatomy will be proposed to plant physiologists and ecologists, and respectively). Furthermore, each event is independent from the others but programmes have been constructed in order to avoid redundancies and to allow attendants to follow two (exceptionally three) of the events without any lost of time.
Event 1 : EuroLabCourse in PLANT ANATOMY (June 2000, Second University of Naples).
Most allelochemicals have been evaluated for their impact on seed germination and radicle growth, without regard to the sequence of cellular events causing growth reduction. Some Italian scientists have focused their researches on this latter aspect and propose to transfer their knowledge to young scientists, theoretically and in practice.
Event 2 : EuroLabCourse in PLANT PHYSIOLOGY (June 2001, University of Vigo).
This event will provide to young scientists techniques such diverse as IRGA, fluorescence, cytometry, biochemical stress markers quantification... to identify and quantify biological effects of allelochemicals on plants physiology.
Event 3 : EuroLabCourse in PLANT ECOLOGY (June 2002, University of Savoie).
Because allelopathy takes place in natural as well as in managed ecosystems, the study of such chemical interaction needs to build an integrated methodology, combining field and laboratory experiments. The proposed event has for objective to initiate young scientists to such a problematics and to teach them few techniques allowing to identify allelopathic and target-plants.
